Goals, Measures, and Activities
Mission Statement: The Indianola Public Library provides free and equally available resources and services for the entire community. The Library promotes reading readiness, access and guidance for information technology, and life-long learning, relaxation and enjoyment.
Goal I: Preschool children and their parents will have programs and services designed to ensure that children will enter school ready to learn to read, write, and listen.
Measure I.1. Attendance at in-library preschool programs will increase by 5% each year.
Measure I.2. Circulation of the picture book collection will increase by 5% each year.
Measure I.3. After the initial year, attendance at early literacy classes for caregivers will increase by 10% each year.
Measure I.4. The number of in-home day care providers participating in targeted library programs and services will increase by 2 each year.
Activity I.1. Work with Warren County Child Care Resource and Referral to identify and distribute program information to in-home day care providers.
Activity I.2. Make available collections of books for in-home day care providers on various topics.
Activity I.3. Maintain an up-to-date collection through a program of annual weeding, replacement and development for demand and topical coverage.
Activity I.4. Implement the “Parents as Literacy Partners” program.
Activity I.5. Provide weekly early literacy tips to caregivers of preschool children.
Activity I.6. Provide a minimum of four regular story times per week for preschool children at times convenient for caregivers.
Activity I.7. Provide on-site story times through a minimum of 16 visits to day cares and preschools monthly.
Activity I.8. Continue monthly Family Time at the Library; investigate and implement an expansion of the program to include all ages, if feasible.
Goal II: Everyone will have the resources he or she needs to explore topics of personal interest and continue to learn throughout his or her life.
Measure II.1. Database use will increase by 5% each year.
Measure II.2. All nonfiction circulation will increase by 3% each year.
Measure II.3. Attendance at topical programs will increase by 10% each year.
Activity II.1. Promote online databases such as EbscoHost, Novelist, ReferenceUSA, HeritageQuest, etc. for both internal and external clients..
Activity II.2. Maintain an up-to-date collection through a program of annual weeding, replacement and development for demand and topical coverage.
Activity II.3. Continue to work with the Warren County Genealogical Society and the Warren County Historical Society to provide local history resources and programming.
Activity II.4. Train library staff in basic local history and genealogical research using print and online resources.
Activity II.5. Provide a minimum of 12 topical programs for a variety of age groups annually.
Activity II.6. Identify and work with community agencies and organizations to provide services and programs for targeted interests such as painting, quilting, photography, etc.
Activity II.7. Provide active and inactive assistance to readers to help them locate materials and reference information.
Goal III: Everyone will have high-speed access to the digital world and will have the skills to search for, locate, evaluate, and effectively use information to meet his or her needs.
Measure III.1. The number of logins on public access computers will increase by 8% each year through FY2011, and then will maintain that level.
Measure III.2. The average wait time for public access computers will be kept at the current level.
Measure III.3. 90% of the persons who complete computer skills courses will indicate that they consider the course 4-5 on a 1-5 rating scale with 5 as excellent.
Measure III.4. The number of persons who attend computer skills courses will increase by 5 each year.
Activity III.1. Maintain public access computers and wireless access at the current level pending the availability of additional space and funding.
Activity III.2. Work with the WeLift program to provide computer services and resources to mutual clients.
Activity III.3. Provide a minimum of 20 basic computer skills sessions annually.
Activity III.4. Develop and implement a plan for offering more computer skills sessions taking into account limited space and staff time.
Activity III.5. Develop and implement a plan for training staff and library clients in information literacy skills using active and inactive techniques.
Goal IV: Everyone will have the materials he or she wants to enhance leisure time, and the assistance he or she needs to find and choose those materials.
Measure IV. 1. Circulation of downloadable audio books will increase by 5% each year.
Measure IV.2. Circulation of DVDs will increase by 5% each year.
Measure IV.3. Participation in the summer reading program will increase by 3% each year.
Measure IV.4. Participation in book clubs for all ages will increase by 2% each year.
Measure IV.5. Circulation of print fiction will increase each year by 5% (teen), 3% (adult), and 2% (juvenile).
Activity IV.1. Provide a summer reading program for all ages.
Activity IV.2. Maintain accurate records on summer reading program participation.
Activity IV.3. Maintain an up-to-date collection in all formats through a program of annual weeding, replacement and development for demand and topical coverage.
Activity IV.4. Maintain existing level of book clubs for a variety of age groups and monitor need for added clubs.
Activity IV.5. Promote WILBOR downloadable audio book collection and familiarize staff and clients with the download process using active and inactive techniques.
Activity IV.6. Work with city and county officials to ensure adequate funding for collections.
