Hillcrest Avenue: Pavement Reconstruction
UPDATE (Friday, October 4, 2024): The City of Indianola is nearing completion for Phase 4A of the project, which involved work on the east half of Hillcrest Avenue between Seventh Street and Ninth Street. Reopening Phase 4A means that the intersection of Ninth Street and Hillcrest Avenue will also reopen to traffic. Traffic in this Phase 4A area is expected to reopen by mid-October, with work on the final phase – Phase 4B – anticipated to begin shortly thereafter.
Phase 4B covers the west half of the block of Hillcrest Avenue between Seventh Street and Ninth Street. Crews are currently potholing the public Right of Way in the Phase 4B area to identify any utility conflicts, which will help determine the start date for this final phase. Every effort is being made to begin and complete Phase 4B by the end of this year and reopen the road to traffic before winter. However, if significant utility conflicts are encountered that delay the start of construction, Phase 4B will commence next spring.
We understand that road closures may inconvenience residents and commuters, and we apologize for any disruptions this may cause. Detour routes are clearly marked for both road and trail closures, and wayfinding signs will be provided to assist any businesses affected by the closure. We kindly request that motorists continue to follow all posted traffic signs and instructions while navigating through the construction zone and exercise caution for the safety of workers and fellow road users.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we keep working toward the completion of this essential infrastructure project.

UPDATE (Thursday, August 29, 2024): Following up from last week’s update, asphalt paving operations on South K Street will start today, Thursday, August 29. It is expected to take about four days, weather permitting.
Beginning Tuesday, September 3, work will start at the intersection of Highway 92 and South K Street. While work is underway, there will be lane shifts and closures, but traffic on Highway 92 will remain open. The road will temporarily reduce from three lanes to two lanes to accommodate construction and ensure traffic flow on Highway 92.
Improvements will include new concrete pavement and dedicated right-turn and left-turn lanes at the intersection. Please see the graphic below for details.
As always, we appreciate the community’s continued flexibility, understanding and cooperation as we work towards the completion of this essential infrastructure project.

UPDATE (Tuesday, August 20, 2024): Crews this week will begin preparing South K Street for asphalt paving, aiming to be completed by Friday, August 23. Then, starting Monday, August 26, asphalt paving operations get underway and is set to be completed within a week once started.
Work for both the preparation and paving operations will begin at the south end near the Indianola Dog Park and move north. South K Street property owners can travel on W 12th Avenue for access, and depending on where the work is happening, may also need to use a dirt path to Hwy 92.
Parts of the road will be torn up and blocked off – especially between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. – and driveways may be inaccessible. However, access will be restored quickly to property owners, and emergency access will be available, if needed.
The Indianola Dog Park will remain open during this time, but parking lot access will be limited at times. Users can park along the north or south of the park and walk in from there.
Please note that the timeline is subject to change based on various factors, like weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances. We will continue to share updates on our website and through social media, as necessary.
