To better serve all roadway users following recent City Council direction, the City of Indianola has improved the pedestrian safety median on East Hillcrest Avenue. This median protects more than 100,000 Summerset Trail users each year while also allowing large farm equipment and vehicles to safely cross.
The median’s curb now has a driveway-like gradient. This allows for vehicles to mount and safely cross the curb when needed. The posts installed on the median are also designed to bend if struck so they do not damage vehicles or equipment. They also include reflective tape to help with nighttime visibility.
Over the coming months, City staff and contractors will collect data to evaluate how the improvements are working for all users and present findings at a future City Council meeting.
