[ARCHIVED] Recap: Indianola City Council Meets Monday, October 6

The Indianola City Council held a regular meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, October 6. 

Among the items that Council approved during the regular meeting were:

  • A resolution authorizing execution of an Encroachment Agreement with Indianola Main Street.
  • Resolution approving the first amendment to the Fiscal Year 26 budget.
  • An amendment to the residential recycling collection contract between Waste Management of Iowa, Inc and the City of Indianola, Iowa.
  • The reappointment of Grant Darrah to the Indianola Public Arts Commission and the appointment of Aaron Labertew to the Sustainability Committee.

October Proclaimed Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Two individuals hold a proclamation document during a meeting.At the October 6 Council meeting, Mayor Steve Richardson proclaimed October as Cybersecurity Awareness Month in Indianola. He was joined by Jason Holder, the City’s chief of innovation and internal services, who gave a brief presentation on the importance of cybersecurity and Indianola’s ongoing efforts to protect its information, assets and users.

As part of the presentation, Holder invited the Council to help set the PACE:

  • Proclaim October as Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
  • Amplify the City’s messages through their own channels.
  • Champion cybersecurity in the community.
  • Exemplify best practices in their own digital habits.

We encourage all residents, businesses and organizations to recognize the importance of cybersecurity, adopt safe online practices and join us in building a more secure and resilient digital community.

October 5-11 Proclaimed Fire Prevention Week

Two individuals hold a proclamation document during a meeting.Additionally, at the October 6 Council meeting, Mayor Richardson proclaimed Oct. 5-11 as Fire Prevention Week in Indianola. This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” highlights the growing fire risks associated with everyday electronics powered by lithium-ion batteries. 

The proclamation emphasizes the importance of public education on battery safety and encourages residents to:

  1. Buy only safety-certified products.
  2. Charge batteries properly.
  3. Recycle them responsibly.

The City’s first responders remain committed to reducing fire risks through prevention, education and community outreach. All residents are encouraged to take simple steps to protect their homes and families from battery-related fires.

Next Council Meeting

The Council will next meet for a study session on Monday, October 13. The next regular Council meeting will be held on Monday, October 20.

The meetings are open to the public and will be held in the Council Chambers at Indianola City Hall, located at 110 N 1st Street, Indianola, IA 50125. 

Livestreams will be available through the City of Indianola's YouTube channel.
