[ARCHIVED] Community Risk Reduction Week: January 19-25, 2026

Community Risk Reduction Week showcasing the Five 3s of CRR

Every 23 seconds, a fire department in the United States responds to a fire. In 2024 alone, fires claimed 2,920 civilian lives and injured 8,920 more, and nearly 75% of these tragedies occurred in the home.

At the same time, wildland/urban interface fires continue to cause multibillion-dollar losses nationwide, while fire departments increasingly respond to medical emergencies that now account for more than 90% of call volume in some communities.

What Is Community Risk Reduction?

Community Risk Reduction (CRR) is a data-driven approach that identifies and prioritizes local risks, then strategically invests resources to reduce both their occurrence and impact. Through the integrated use of the Five Es of CRR, many fire-related incidents and medical emergencies can be prevented before they happen:

  1. Education
  2. Engineering
  3. Enforcement
  4. Economic Incentives
  5. Emergency Response

Why CRR Week Matters

In recognition of the importance of proactive risk reduction and strong community partnerships, January 19-25, 2026, is designated as CRR Week, coinciding with Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the National Day of Service.

The Indianola Fire Department is proud to join the State of Iowa Fire Coalition in raising awareness about CRR and encouraging education, outreach and service activities that help make our community safer.

How You Can Help
