Street crews for the City of Indianola Public Works Department have been actively plowing since 7 p.m. Thursday, February 19, as Indianola received approximately 5 1/2 inches of snow, with some areas possibly seeing higher totals. Ahead of the storm, crews treated roadways with a sand-and-salt mixture to improve traction.
Snowfall is expected to taper off by mid-day Friday. Once accumulation ends, crews will shift their focus to final cleanup efforts across the community. Please note that strong winds are creating blowing and drifting snow, and travel conditions will remain hazardous this morning.
The Winter Weather Advisory issued by the National Weather Service has been extended until 9 a.m. Friday for our area.
Snow Emergency Parking Ban
The Snow Emergency Parking Ban, which went into effect at 6 p.m. Thursday, will remain in place for 48 hours after snowfall ends or until the ban is lifted otherwise. During this time, parking is prohibited on all public streets and alleys. Violations may result in a $35 fine and/or towing.

City Ordinance 69.10 prohibits parking on any public street or alley during a Snow Emergency Parking Ban. Due to two or more inches predicted by the National Weather Service, a Snow Emergency Parking Ban will be in effect beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, February 19.
The ban remains in place for 48 hours after the snow has stopped falling or it is otherwise lifted. Vehicles may not be parked on streets or alleys during this time. Once streets and alleys are cleared you may resume parking there.
If your vehicle is in violation of the Snow Emergency Parking Ban, you will be subject to a $35 fine and/or your vehicle may be towed at your expense.
The Streets Division of the City of Indianola Public Works Department plans to apply a sand-and-salt mix to roadways this evening, based on storm timing and actual snow accumulation.

Winter Weather Advisory
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Indianola from 6 a.m. Thursday, February 19, to 9 a.m. Friday, February 20.
According to the National Weather Service, precipitation will spread from western into central Iowa this afternoon and evening. Initially, it may begin as a mix of rain and snow across southern and western Iowa before changing to all snow.
By Friday morning, a band of 5 to 8 inches of snow is expected from western through central to northeastern Iowa. There will be a sharp gradient of snowfall amounts on either side of the heaviest band of snow.
Snowfall rates may exceed one inch per hour at times this evening, leading to rapid accumulations on roads and slick travel conditions.
The National Weather Service notes that even a small shift in the location of this band could significantly alter forecast snow amounts.
